Rogue ex-NHS Tayside surgeon Professor Sam Eljamel is still a registered landlord at a Dundee property just minutes away from Ninewells Hospital where he botched operations.
The disgraced doctor has not yet cut all ties to Dundee despite departing Scotland for his birth country Libya several years ago after victims exposed his medical malpractice.
Campaigners who claim they were “butchered” at the hands of Prof Eljamel after being left with life-changing injuries have made repeated demands for a Scottish Government inquiry to be held as they seek justice.
Eljamel could still be earning income in Dundee
Victims have raised questions over why the medic was initially allowed to continue working for NHS Tayside after the alarm had been raised over his conduct.
The disgraced doctor removed one mother’s tear gland instead of a tumour, and was ordered to pay another woman £2.8 million in compensation due to his mistakes.
The Courier can reveal he could still potentially be earning rental income from a property he has owned in Dundee for decades.
On the Scottish Landlord Register, a Dundee home in Menzieshill, a two-minute drive away from Ninewells, is listed under Prof Eljamel’s name.
Pat Kelly, a campaigner who was a victim of the doctor, was furious that the medic is still able to potentially earn money in Scotland from rental income.
He told The Courier: “I am disgusted that a surgeon who has caused such medical negligence to his patients can still make money in this country as a landlord.
“Many of his patients lost their jobs and are now living in poverty and will see this as another slap in the face. What else will come out about this rogue surgeon?”
The listing on the Scottish Landlord Register showed the home is managed by Dundee estate agency Pavillion Properties.
The agency declined to respond when approached by The Courier.
Documents showed the medic had gone to a tribunal in 2019 in an attempt to evict a tenant from the property.
Scotland’s land register shows the property last changed hands in 2003, when Prof Eljamel was working for NHS Tayside.
Cross-party group discus concerns
Meanwhile, SNP health chief Humza Yousaf met a cross-party group of MSPs on Thursday to discuss their wider concerns.
He rejects calls for a public inquiry and claims all remaining questions are for NHS Tayside to answer.
Mid Scotland and Fife Tory MSP Liz Smith, who was at the meeting, said: “There are now 67 former patients who have come forward, each with their own harrowing story, and l suspect there are more who have also suffered. They deserve justice too.”
Ms Smith is now invited to sit on a further meeting with the health board, to be confirmed. She will be joined by local MSPs Willie Rennie, Michael Marra, Graeme Dey and Shona Robison.
We previously revealed Prof Eljamel had lied on his own website about completing a specialist degree in the United States.
He also paid for a fake “Man of the Year” award to fraudulently boost his CV.
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “The Scottish Government recognises the importance of accountability and expects NHS Tayside to continue to give a clear account of their ongoing actions.
“The Health Secretary is keen to continue to engage wherever he can and is looking forward to meeting MSPs next week.”
NHS Tayside was contacted for comment.
