An SNP MSP has called for a tightening of abortion laws in Scotland
.John Mason, who is pro-life, is pushing for the 24-week time limit on terminations to be “regularly reviewed”.
In a Scottish Parliament motion, Mr Mason applied pressure on his own government to reduce the time limit.
The Glasgow MSP said that “medical science is constantly advancing so that babies born early are surviving at a younger and younger age”.
“In the light of such medical advances, the time limit of 24 weeks needs to be regularly reviewed,” Mr Mason added.
It emerged last week that ministers have given Scotland’s health boards the power to allow the drug misoprostol to be taken outside of a clinical setting.
The move means women do not have to go through heavy bleeding and other medical issues while travelling back from the hospital.
But the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) Scotland said the “DIY abortions are a much greater threat to mental health”.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “The Scottish Government has no plans to change the law on abortion.”
