Nicola Sturgeon is planning to visit Catalonia following an invitation by its separatist leader.
Minutes of a meeting in Edinburgh last month between Ms Sturgeon and Quim Torra revealed she was “delighted” to accept the president’s invitation to Barcelona.
It is understood that no arrangements for the meeting have been made.
The First Minister has stopped short of explicitly supporting the region’s independence bid, despite close ties between Scottish and Catalan Yes movements.
Mr Torra was in Scotland to raise the plight of Clara Ponsati, the St Andrews professor who faced extradition to Spain for her part as a minister in an unsanctioned independence referendum in October.
The court bid was later dropped.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “The First Minister had a productive meeting with President Torra and we will look towards opportunities to work together in the future.”
Adam Tomkins, the Scottish Conservative, said Ms Sturgeon’s intention to head to Catalonia shows she has “become utterly side-tracked playing to the nationalist gallery”.
