Fife Council must not be punished for its attempt to boycott controversial tests for 5-year-olds, says an MSP.
Education Secretary John Swinney has signalled he will forge ahead with the P1 standardised assessments despite Holyrood voting to abolish them last month.
The Scottish Parliament’s decision triggered moves by several councils to halt the tests.
Tavish Scott, the Lib Dem MSP, said it would be “wrong” if local authorities were penalised for that by the government withholding education funding.
A majority of Fife councillors voted for the SNP-Labour administration to write to the Scottish Government to request stopping them.
Mr Swinney is updating the parliament on Thursday on the next steps for the P1 assessments.
A survey in the Sunday Times revealed public opinion is divided on the issue.
The Panelbase poll found 41% are opposed to the literacy and numeracy assessments for 4 and 5-year-olds, while 38% are in favour.
