Richard Leonard says he prefers a Labour Brexit to a second EU referendum – but would campaign for Remain in any vote.
The Scottish Labour leader said if Jeremy Corbyn’s five exit demands, including joining a European customs union, were not accepted by Theresa May then Euroref2 must follow.
He told journalists: “We are keen to be able to amend the deal.
“If we are not successful in doing that then the vote that will take place would contain the option of remain, but it would also need to contain, in our view, a credible leave option as well.”
Asked for his preference between a second referendum and a Labour Brexit deal, Mr Leonard said: “For that deal.”
On how he would campaign ahead of any EU plebiscite, the MSP said: “Well, we haven’t got to that point yet.
“I mean I have been asked this question before and my own personal position would be I would campaign for remain but we haven’t reached that point yet.”
