Defence chiefs have evoked the Royal Navy’s historical might by naming the new Trident-carrying submarines Dreadnought.
The new nuclear submarines, which succeed the Vanguard class and will continue to be based on the Clyde, will “deter the most extreme threats to Britain’s security”, said Defence Secretary Michael Fallon.
A spokesman for the SNP said: “It is entirely fitting that the Ministry of Defence have named their new submarines after something from the history books given that is where the useless Trident weapons system belongs.”
Dreadnought was the name given to Britain’s first nuclear-powered submarine, as well as the battleships that repelled the Spanish Armada.
