LIVE UPDATES: After general election ends with hung parliament — what happens next?
ByCourier reporters
Theresa May is due to make her position clear after her gamble to hold a snap general election spectacularly failed.
Seeking a strong mandate ahead of the start of the Brexit negotiations in just 10 days, she instead saw her party’s majority disappear.
It is understood she will visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace at 12.30pm to seek permission to form a minority government backed by the informal support of the Democratic Unionist Party’s 10 MPs.
Although the Conservatives are the largest single party, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has already signalled that he has not ruled out trying to form the next government.
It was also a damaging night for the SNP, who lost 21 MPs — including big-hitters Alex Salmond and Angus Robertson — and face claims that they have lost any mandate to push for a second independence referendum.
