Jeremy Hunt’s hustings performances have increased the Tory leadership candidate’s popularity over Boris Johnson in Courier Country.
In a poll carried out on www.thecourier.co.uk, we asked readers whether the UK-wide hustings, which included an appearance in Perth, had changed people’s views on who should succeed Theresa May as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister.
Of 605 votes, Hunt was favoured by 54% to be the next PM, with Johnson on 46%.
Of these, 37% of Hunt supporters had not changed their mind after the hustings, but 16% were now convinced that he should be the next leader of Great Britain.
For Johnson, 34% had not changed their view, while only 11% had decided that the hustings had persuaded them to change their mind and back his long-held ambition to reside in 10 Downing Street.
The winner will be chosen by the Conservative Party’s 160,000 members, who have been voting since July 6. The final deadline for party members to vote is on Sunday July 21.
The candidate achieving more than 50 per cent of the vote among party members will be declared leader of the party. The winner, and new Prime Minister, is expected to be announced on July 23.
