This is the moment a long-standing Tory MP dramatically defected from the party, leaving Boris Johnson’s government without a working majority.
Phillip Lee crossed the floor of the House of Commons while the Prime Minister was delivering a statement on the recent G7 summit and sat with Liberal Democrat politicians.
Dr Lee then announced that he had joined the opposition party.
The incident prompted much commotion in Parliament with a momentarily flustered Mr Johnson saying: “I wish my honourable friend all the best.”
Dr Lee’s departure means Boris Johnson’s government has now lost its working majority in the Commons.
