Dundee FC goalkeeper legend Ally Donaldson responded to a BwB piece regarding some of his Dens team-mates.
Ally opened: “It was interesting reading your column of December 15 about Jimmy Gabriel recommending John Phillips to Dundee.
“Phil Tinney came to Dens Park from Liverpool, along with Alex Totten, a former schoolboy internationalist.
“Both were recommended to Bob Shankly by his brother Bill, the Liverpool manager.
“Phil was an outside-left and Alex was a full-back.
“All three arrived prior to the 1964-65 season, along with Jocky Scott from Chelsea.”
Carnoustie resident Ally (pictured) went on: “The League Cup at the beginning of 1964-65 season saw mixed results for Dundee and they failed to qualify from their section.
“The final section game was against Motherwell at Dens, so, with nothing to play for, Bob Shankly introduced several young players.
“Alex Totten, John Phillips, Phil Tinney, Jocky Scott and myself were all selected.
“We ran out 6-0 winners, which was a fine result against a good Motherwell side.
“Myself and Jocky kept our places, but Alex Totten moved on to Dunfermline a year later.
“John Philips moved to Airdrie, but I’m not sure where Phil Tinney went.”
Files reveal that Tinney joined Dutch club Heracles.
He also played in America for Philadelphia Spartans and Dallas Tornado.
There is also mention of him joining Wigan Athletic, but having his career ended by a broken leg.
