Frank Gilfeather, whose family were steeped in boxing, featured recently when he assisted a BwB reader with information about the old Premierland boxing stadium in Dundee, which was situated in William Lane, between King Street and Victoria Road.
Fights there were promoted by local Dundee bookmaker George Grant.
Journalist and broadcaster Frank, who has also written plays and books, further revealed: “Grant died in 1966, aged 61.
“He also promoted the world flyweight title fight between Scot Jackie Paterson and Liverpudlian Joe Curran at Hampden Park, Glasgow, in July 1946, watched by more than 45,000 people.
“Paterson, from Glasgow, won on points.
“The remarkable thing about pro boxing in Dundee in the 1930s and 1940s was that crowds flocked to see shows at venues such as Tannadice Park, Dens Park, Dundee Ice Rink and the Caird Hall.
“Station Park in Forfar and the City Hall (Perth) were other popular venues.”
