Blether: Ally didn’t reckon his team would make cup final

The December 30 photo of Broughty United AFC saw the team display an award, which was soon identified as the Midlands AFA First Division Championship Shield.

We relayed this fact at the start of January.

However, two people got in touch to add some gloss to the tale — one who was in the photo and another who was not, but should have been.

Jackie Knight, who was in the picture, confirmed the identity of the shield, and continued: “The photo was taken on the Saturday after we beat Grove FP the previous Wednesday to clinch the league title.

“We had beaten NCR 2-1 at their Kingsway grounds the previous Saturday before the final league game v Grove.

“The picture was take before the Bremner Cup Final against NCR, which they won 4-1.

“We had played 18 games in six weeks and Ronnie Nicoll was drafted into our goal as Ally Martin had booked his family holiday, thinking the season would have been over.”

Ally, a good friend to this column, also presented more information on the trophy.

He said: “The shield was presented to the Midlands AFA by a group of local businessmen from the law, medical, architectural, chartered accountancy, banking and insurance professions.

“A founder member of the MAFA, GD Knowles was a local insurance company manager, who became the second president of the association from 1927-28.

“He persuaded the business men and they wished to remain anonymous.

“Knowles was attached to YM Anchorage AFC, a founding member of MAFA, but who went into abeyance in 1993 after 67 years continuous membership.

“The shield was won for the first time in 1927 by Aeros AFC, based at RAF Leuchars, who dropped just three points in a 12-team league.

“That Aeros side included two players who won Victoria Crosses, the highest award for gallantry, during the First World War.

“Broughty United won the shield in season 1969-70, breaking a 10-year domination by NCR and again in1971-72, 1973-74, 1974-75 and 1996-97.

“Of the 12 founding teams in 1926, only Morgan Academy FP and Newport remain members of MAFA, though Arbroath HSFP, who joined in 1927, are still in the association.

“The shield is competed for to this day, though its seniority was diminished when MAFA formed a Premier League in season 1990.”
