Evening Telegraph swimming correspondent Frank Jordan revealed he is often asked who he thought was the best Dundee swimmer throughout the years.
“There’s been many, many outstanding Dundee swimmers who represented GB and Scotland,” said Frank, of Lochee.
“However, there’s been just one who won an Olympic medal — and that was Cissy Stewart, of the Dundee Belmont club, in the 1928 Olympics held in France.
“Through the years, aquatic sports have been very popular in Dundee in diving, swimming and water polo.
“But the one I would nominate for Dundee’s most outstanding would be Robert Screenan, of the Whitehall club.
“He took part in the 1952 Olympics and represented GB many times, and also Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.”
Frank continued: “One of his most outstanding swims was done in Dundee when he swam the double Tay swim in a record time of 38 min 31 sec.
“He dived off the pier in Broughty Ferry at the same time as the ‘Fifie’ boat left Dundee for Newport, but Robert was back in the Ferry before the Fife boat got to Dundee.
“That happened on June 2, 1960.”
Frank concluded: “Robert’s family were all involved in swimming as well.
“His brother Steve was an outstanding swimmer and water polo player.
“Also involved in the sport were his younger brother George and his sister Maureen.
“In those days, it seemed swimming was the sport for families.”
