Blether: It’s over, but the Riverside Athletic legacy will live on

Blether: It’s over, but the Riverside Athletic legacy will live on

The recent Riverside Athletic AFC Farewell Sportsman’s Dinner was deemed a great success by all who attended.

A decision was made last year to call time on this great local amateur football club after over 45 years.

Dave Wemyss, the front face of the club to so many, has been humbled by the support he has received throughout the decades.

He told me: “I just want to thank all who attended the dinner and, indeed, all who have supported us over these five decades.

“The night was a great send off for the club, which I have been part of for the past 45-plus years.

“Our last ever life member Chris Thomson — along with Keith and Jackie McKenzie — put the night together and they all did a great job, as did well known speakers Tam Cowan and Alan Rough.”

Dave also took time out to remember those who were with him when the great journey started, and those who assisted throughout the years.

He continued: “Along with Jim Tierney, Francie Wemyss and Ronnie Green, we were all at the club from the start.

“We are all trying hard to take in the fact that the journey for ‘The River’ has finally ended.

“We have also had some great sponsors along the way such as Dave and Sandra Young, Eleanor and the late Jim McLaren, and Benny Scanlan.

“They were all generous and long term benefactors in the Riverside history.

“I shouldn’t forget to include my workmates from Dundee Contract Services, who supported the club in various ways for 30 years.

“The famous Riverside Honours Board is adorned with many life members who couldn’t make it to our final event, along with countless legendary players who couldn’t make it on the night.

“During our history, we made many friends — and possibly some foes, I might add — during our time in the Welfare, Angus and Midlands associations.

“These were three great associations.

“We enjoyed much success in the North of Tay Cup and had many long runs in the Scottish Cup.”
