Another recent contribution from Andy Walker mentioned striker Joe McBride.
McBride, father of Joe McBride who played for Dundee in the late 1980s and early 1990s, first made his name with Motherwell as a free-scoring centre-forward and Jock Stein was soon alerted as to his availability.
The Govan-born striker made an immediate impact and his stats with the Parkhead outfit show he scored very nearly a goal a game — 86 in 94 games.
He was the first-choice striker in Celtic’s legendary 1966-67 season but suffered a serious injury in December that term.
Despite having played just 26 games that season, his 36 goals was enough to give him Celtic and Scotland’s top scorer award.
Indeed, in an interview, legendary Hoops boss Jimmy McGrory, who preceded Jock Stein in the Parkhead hot seat, claimed McBride was ‘the best Celtic centre-forward I’ve ever seen play’.
Joe had a good scoring record with all the clubs he played for.
These included, prior to joining Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Wolves, Luton and Partick Thistle.
After leaving Celtic, he had spells with Hibs, Dunfermline and Clyde.
Joe, pictured below challenging Dundee goalie Ally Donaldson, passed away in 2012, aged 74.
