Tayport Junior FC set to honour legends Alastair, Ken and Abby at dinner

In January, Tayport Junior FC will hold a presentation dinner to celebrate and recognise the contribution over many years of three recently-retired club members.

Dave Baikie was manager of the club during their halcyon years of Scottish Cup wins, league and local cup successes.

Dave is now president of the club and is part of a team of organisers for this event seeking to honour Abby Oswald, Alastair Oswald and Ken Smith.

“These three Canniepairt stalwarts are well known in both amateur and junior football circles,” said Derek Ritchie, a lifelong supporter of the club.

“They were all heavily involved in Tayport’s tremendously-successful step up to the junior ranks in 1990.

“Abby, of course, held the role of club secretary for close to 50 years, stretching back to his playing days which began in the 1960s.

“His phenomenal commitment to the cause has played a major role in Tayport’s success over the years.

“Abby’s brother Alastair, known to one and all as Hercx, also contributed hugely to the day-to-day running of the club for decades.

“He served as vice-chairman for many years, before assuming the role of chairman after Eddie Stewart passed away in 2009.

“Kenny Smith, most recently vice-chairman, is another familiar face at The Canniepairt.

“He has served on the committee for a very long time, following on from his playing days with the club in the amatuer days, which lasted well into the 1980s.”

Derek, who also writes match reports of Tayport’s games for their website and other media, continued:

“Players, coaching staff, committee members and supporters, past and present, are likely to attend the dinner in large numbers.

“I’m sure plenty of memories will be shared on the night.

“The stories will range from on- the-park successes to off-the-park antics.

“Trips to away games the length and breadth of the country will be remembered, as will legendary visits to Belgium, where the club regularly took part in international competitions organised by Royal Amical Club Ougrée.”

The dinner goes ahead at the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee, on Saturday, January 29.

Dave Baikie revealed: “Speakers are Davie Nicoll, a former Forfar Athletic goalkeeper, who was also Tayport’s goalkeeping coach, and comedian Joe Camay.

“Tickets are priced at £30.

“Contact numbers for tickets are Gus Malone 07743 587295, Drew Herd 07708 590343, Ian McMillan 07766 699608 and myself 07939 566406.”

Dave concluded: “Ticket sales are going briskly.

“So, if you want to attend, get on the blower asap.”
