Arbroath manager Dick Campbell was frustrated by the way his side contrived to come away empty-handed from a match they dominated in terms of possession, having missed a barrow-load of chances and conceded cheap goals.
The disappointment of this latest defeat, the ninth at Gayfield this season, was compounded by the visitors grabbing the decisive winning goal in the final minute and after being reduced to 10 men following Calum’s Crane’s 84th minute dismissal for receiving a second yellow card.
Arbroath broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when substitute Kane Hester nudged the ball over the line following some fine play by Greg Rutherford.
More goals looked likely but it was a major surprise when the next one came out of nothing at the other end, Steven Notman beating Allan Fleming at the Arbroath’s keeper’s near post.
Lichties defender Andy Munro then twice saw headers from Jordan Lowdon corners come back off the woodwork.
But there was to be one final agonising twist to Arbroath’s day when Michael McKenna looped a header over the stranded Fleming.
