Manager Paul Hegarty was left shaking his head as a late free-kick goal from the veteran Craig Beattie denied Montrose what would have been a fully deserved three points against Stirling Albion.
Hegarty said: “There was only one team on the park, and if we had gone four or five up it would have been a true reflection. But it is goals that count.
“We got a goal from one of the hardest opportunities we created, a lovely strike from the edge of the box by Graham Webster.
“They went gung-ho but we held out well until we stupidly dived in to give away a free-kick and they scored from it.
“I was disappointed with the decision as the referee allowed play to go on for some time before finally awarding the free-kick.
“We dominated from start to finish, but my players do not perform like that often enough.”
Montrose found the net on 58 minutes. Webster turned 25 yards out, and curled a beauty in off the post.
On 89 minutes a challenge by Masson gave away a free-kick and Beattie stepped up to drive the ball high past Jordan Millar.
Montrose are involved in a battle with Arbroath to finish eighth in the league. Montrose have a point advantage with two games to play, and the sides meet at Gayfield on Saturday.
