Berwick 2 East Fife 0: Champions curse hits Fife

Gary Naysmith.
Gary Naysmith.

East Fife player-boss Gary Naysmith was at a loss to explain why his side were hit by a curse of the champions at Berwick.

The Methil men arrived at Shielfield with the League Two title in the bag and were applauded on to the park by the home side.

But Berwick proved to be far from the perfect hosts, rattling in two goals in the closing stages to retain the three points.

It was a win which, in the grand scheme of things, means absolutely nothing to either side, but that didn’t stop Naysmith from preparing for the encounter like any other.

The dropping of the points left the Bayview gaffer puzzled but he conceded he’s not the only title-winning boss in the country to have that headache.

He said: “I don’t know why it happens, but it’s human nature. Rangers won their league and then Hibs beat them and then they drew with Alloa.

“Dunfermline won their league and got a walloping last week and beaten 3-0 again this week.

“I worked all week to try and make sure it didn’t happen. But we fell into the same trap.”

Naysmith shuffled his pack ahead of the game after wrapping up the title last week against Clyde.

Blair Henderson and Darren laverty were on the mark for the hosts in the closing 20 minutes while the Fifers were reduced to 10 men when Jordan McGregor received his second yellow after a foul on Brodie Gray.
