Forfar 1 Montrose 3: Loons crash out in Angus derby

The shock of the day in League 2 came in the Angus derby at Station Park, where Montrose grabbed the bragging rights and the three points against Forfar Athletic.

The Loons went into the match with a 100% league record but never came close to matching the work rate and effort from the visitors, who deservedly won thanks to two goals from Gary Fraser, including a penalty, and one from Forfar old boy Chris Templeman.

Montrose boss Paul Hegarty agreed his side had deserved to win and was delighted to have taken the points from Forfar, who still remain seven clear at the top of the table.

“Forfar have been flying for two or three months, but sometimes this type of game happens” he said.

“I think overall we were just the better side.

“Gary Bollan and his side are well organised and obviously they made chances. On another day we could have been on the end of it. But we did create chances, too.

“It gets us another away win. Last year we were winning games at home quite comfortably but couldn’t buy an away win. This year we have no home wins.

“If we can try and get our home form up a bit, hopefully that will get us up the league a wee bit.

“I think in the first half there were chances galore from both sides. If the score at half time had been 3-3, it would have been a fair reflection of the game.

“Fortunately for us, we scored about five minutes before half time. We had a bit of good fortune with Gary Fraser getting a deflection past Grant Adam, but that settled us down a bit.

“Then, right after half time, we scored again to get us to 2-0 and we haven’t had that luxury for a long time. I think some of the players didn’t realise what was happening!

“But we kept possession and kept our shape and then we got a third goal.

“The disappointing thing was losing a goal late on, but I’m just delighted to come to a difficult place like Station Park and win.”

Montrose harassed and harried Forfar throughout and never gave the league leaders a chance to settle and play the football that took them on their remarkable winning run.

A high-paced end-to-end start saw chances for both sides, with Montrose going closest in the 10th minute when Fraser scooped a looping effort high into the air which keeper Grant Adam had to touch on to the crossbar.

Four minutes later the Forfar woodwork was again rattling as Kieran McWalter thundered a 25-yard strike against the bar, with Adam beaten.

Then, Forfar were left cursing their luck as a Jim Lister header from a lovely Gavin Swankie cross caught the post before being cleared.

Tam O’Brien then headed wide of an open Montrose goal as Lister caught out keeper Allan Fleming.

Ex-Loon Michael Bochoweckyji was guilty at the other end of blasting high with the goal at his mercy.

It was an inevitable a goal would come, it was just a surprise it took until three minutes from the interval and was a scrappy one. Fraser was given time on the edge of the box to shoot but his effort took a wicked deflection off Stuart Malcolm to wrong-foot the Forfar keeper.

Two minutes after the interval Forfar were two down thanks to two old boys. Iain Campbell whipped in a free kick and Adam looked to have claimed it before spilling at the feet of Templeman, who stabbed it over the line from a yard out.

The shock drubbing was completed when Montrose went three up in the 64th minute from the penalty spot. Malcolm wrapped his legs around McWalter in a tackle in the box.

Referee Colin Steven had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and Fraser thumped the ball home.

Danny Denholm grabbed a consolation for Forfar deep into stoppage time, but it was a very poor showing from Gary Bollan’s team.
