Considering Montrose were beaten 5-0 at home the last time they played Elgin City, this afternoon’s trip to Borough Briggs looks like a “mission impossible” for the Angus side.
However, caretaker boss John Holt saw enough positives in the midweek performance in the Scottish Cup against League 1 Queen’s Park to believe that the Gable Endies can upset the odds.
Montrose, who had two men sent off when they played Elgin in October, have produced their best performances and results on the road this season and Holt hopes they can do so again today.
He said: “We were obviously disappointed to go out of the cup on Tuesday night against Queen’s Park.
“Afterwards I said I thought it was a plucky performance but on reflection it was a semi-decent display against a team from the league above us.
“When the score was 1-0 to Queen’s, Graham Webster had a great chance to get us back in it and I felt we more than matched them.
“There were plenty of positives to take into Saturday’s game against Elgin City.
“They beat us the last time we met them and Jim Weir always has them well organised.
“But we have done well this season against the bigger teams and have had good results on the road at Forfar and Annan.
“The lads trained really well on Thursday night and thankfully we have no injuries.
“So we will be looking to go up there and get a win.”
