Montrose battled their way to victory over promotion-chasing Clyde, a win which took them off the bottom of League Two and gave Stewart Petrie a triumphant start as manager.
Petrie said: “That was the result I was looking for after a spirited performance.
“We had to weather the storm in the second half. Our keeper made a couple of great saves and our centre-halves kept winning headers.
“We scored a fine winning goal. It was a great run by Cammy Ballantyne and a great finish by Graham Webster.
“We are off the bottom and that is good mentally for the guys.
“We had a couple of chances to score again towards the end, but I am delighted to hit the ground running.”
Clyde had the first chance on six minutes when Jordan Millar saved from David Gormley.
Ten minutes later, the home keeper dived to turn another Gormley shot round the post.
Montrose took the lead on 26 minutes. Callum MacDonald was fouled by Martin McNiff as he went for a Paul Watson free-kick and Gary Fraser scored from the spot.
Fraser had the ball in the net again on 41 minutes after a slick move, but Ballantyne was offside before he supplied the scoring pass.
Clyde drew level on 52 minutes. Callum MacDonald was judged to have handled in the box and Peter MacDonald converted the penalty.
Millar pulled off a string of saves to keep Montrose in the game. He dived to save shots from Ewan McNeil and Scott McLaughlin, then somehow parried a close range header from Sean Higgins.
Montrose regained the lead in 71 minutes. Ballantyne surged down the right and his cross to the near post was fired home by Webster.
