When Bobby Barr was part-time at Brechin City, his day job was working in a cake factory.
Now full-time with Raith Rovers, he is hoping he can find the recipe for success to help his side beat Dundee United at Stark’s Park this afternoon.
However, the 28-year-old winger is fully aware it will be far from a piece of cake with the high-flying Tangerines currently on a 12-game unbeaten run.
He said: “I was only part-time at Brechin. The first year I didn’t bother with a day job but the second I went and got one.
“It was to get some extra money, working in a cake factory on the machinery.
“It paid for a holiday to Florida which was great.
“So it is good for me to be playing full-time football. You want to do that for as long as you can.
“Everybody thinks football is the best job in the world and it is but then you have to go and get a job like everybody else.
“So I am determined to enjoy it while I can.”
Barr made his comeback from a knee injury against St Mirren last week but he could not prevent Rovers from losing in Paisley.
Raith have not won in their last four league games but they drew with United at Tannadice earlier this season and Barr insists they can approach this afternoon’s encounter with confidence.
And he is hoping did enough in defeat against St Mirren to convince boss Gary Locke he is deserving of a start against United.
He said: “It is a big game and hopefully I will be in the manager’s thoughts to start against United.
“Obviously, we are on a wee dip just now and haven’t won for a few games.
“We did create chances against St Mirren and it was as well as we have played for a while.
“But we are at home against United who we have played already this season.
“They are on some run just now but we have played them away from home and there is nothing to fear there. We just have to give it our best.”
Barr was signed on a pre-contract for Raith while he was at Morton by former Stark’s boss Ray McKinnon, who will of course be in the away team’s dug-out today.
Barr, who played under McKinnon previously at Brechin, admitted he owes him a big debt of gratitude but he will be going all out to ensure he leaves Kirkcaldy pointless.
He said: “Yes, it is a bit strange. Ray was kind enough to give me a deal here.
“But Raith have been good to me so hopefully I can put one over on him on Saturday.
“I probably wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for Ray. I was happy at Morton and one of the main reasons I signed for Raith was because of the manager.
“So I wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for him. I am thoroughly enjoying it and I feel I am doing all right.
“After my injury, the aim was to be back by Christmas and the United game was maybe the target to be on the bench.
“So I am a wee bit early but I am just delighted to be back and hopefully I can contribute on Saturday.”
