Montrose boss Stewart Petrie looking to build on first win

After getting his managerial career off to a winning start, Montrose boss Stewart Petrie is looking for more of the same today at Berwick.

The Gable Endies gaffer watched his side defeat Clyde 2-1 at Links Park last Saturday – their first home win of the season.

It was also Petrie’s first game in charge and he was delighted that the victory lifted his team off the bottom of the table.

Now, he believes his players can travel with confidence on the long journey south this afternoon.

He said: “I didn’t realise until after the game that was our Montrose’s first home win of the season.

“We probably rode our luck a bit in the second half but our keeper and defenders did well.

“Overall I thought we played some good stuff and the lads also showed great spirit.

“The league is still very tight – we are only three points off fifth place – and it is fine lines.

“The fact that Clyde thumped Arbroath 5-0 last week and then Arbroath went to the league leaders Forfar on Saturday and won just sums up how tight this league is.

“If you turn up on the day, then you will always have a chance no matter who the opposition is.

“We now face a tough game at Berwick. I have been there many times and it is always a difficult place to go to.

“However, we have prepared well this week and we will travel with a bit of confidence after our victory over Clyde.

“We have no new injury worries.”

Meanwhile, Petrie’s search for an assistant continues but he is determined to take his time.

He added: “I am not going to rush that appointment. I am determined to bring the right man in.”
