Former Arbroath midfielder Barry Sellars has returned to Gayfield to become the club’s first Head of Recruitment.

The 46-year-old, who made over 170 appearances during two spells for the Lichties, will oversee its new talent identification team.

He will be assisted by Craig Ireland and Brown Ferguson.

Dundonian Ireland had spells as a player at Dunfermline, Dundee and Falkirk north of the border as well as Notts County, Barnsley and Peterbrough in England.

Ferguson, meanwhile, was most recently manager of Linlithgow Rose. He also enjoyed a footballing career with the likes of Alloa, Partick and Stenhousemuir.

Arbroath say the creation of the team is “another significant step in the club’s business plan and vision for the future”.

The trio will work to identify and bring new players to Gayfield.

Sellars approached by Dick and Pink

Arbroath-native Sellars said he was asked by the Campbell management duo to come on board.

“When approached by Dick and Ian to take up this new role, it was an area I am experienced in and have a passion for,” he told the Arbroath website.

“I had no hesitation in accepting and I am absolutely thrilled to take up the position as the club’s official recruitment lead.”

Arbroath No.2 Ian Campbell added: “We are delighted to appoint Barry into this exciting new role at Gayfield.

“In a short space of time, the infrastructure of the club has grown massively and it’s been a key corner-stone for both Dick and I and the Directors, to appoint a dedicated and experienced recruitment team ensuring we identify future players, in the Scottish, UK and European Markets.

“I look forward to working closely with Barry, Craig and Brown on a day to day and weekly basis, identifying the key talent we need.

“Their expertise and commitment is impressive.”
