John Potter says Kelty Hearts deserved something from Dunfermline defeat and lays down Darren Lyon challenge

Kelty boss John Potter
Kelty Hearts manager John Potter.

John Potter thought his side should have taken something from their 2-1 defeat to Dunfermline at East End Park.

Kelty Hearts started the better side and came within inches of taking the lead through Alfredo Agyeman.

Nikolay Todorov gave the Pars the lead before Darren Lyon equalised with a goal-of-the-season contender.

Craig Wighton won it with a second-half strike but Kelty had their chances to equalise.

Kallum Higginbotham missed an open goal and was later denied by Deniz Mehmet when he looked certain to score.

‘We deserved something’

“I thought we were the better team first – good chances,” said Potter.

“I think the opening goal is a mistake.

“In the second half Dunfermline started well and got their goal when they were on top.

“Then I thought we finished quite strong.

“Overall we deserved to take something from the game. but we didn’t, simple as that.”

The Kelty manager said he would need to watch Higginbotham’s goalmouth chance to see exactly how he managed to loop it over the bar under pressure from Comrie.

Lyon challenge

Potter praised Lyon’s spectacular goal but challenged the player, who he coached previously, to find the net more often.

“Brilliant finish,” said Potter. “I know Darren, I worked with him at Queen’s Park.

“He’s an unbelievable striker of the ball – he should score more goals.”

In all the Kelty boss was disappointed but said there will be plenty of positives to take when the footage is analysed.

It is a far cry from earlier in the season when the side struggled for points.

“I thought we were quite strong when we lost that [opening] goal,” he said.

“Even in the second half, they were on top at that point, I thought we regained it again – without being brilliant.

“After that we still pushed and had chances.

“For us to come and show what we did was great but it’s a disappointment because we’re here to win games.”
