Colin Cameron says the opportunity to come back to Raith Rovers, after 26 years away, came “out of the blue”.
Known affectionately as ‘Mickey’, he is the local supporter who went on to become a club legend.
Spells in the top flights of Scotland and England, and caps for his country, followed.
Now he is back at Stark’s Park – probably the only club he’d have returned to football for, he tells Courier Sport.
Cameron was last in the game at Aidrieonians as Ian Murray’s assistant, a time cut short during the pandemic.
It is a role he was happy to take up again at Stark’s Park, though after some consultation with his family.
Cameron, who recently turned 50, won a League Cup and two promotions with Raith as a player.
‘Winners’
He went on to open the scoring in Hearts’ 1998 Scottish Cup win, represent his country and win promotion to the Premier League with Wolves.
In Murray he saw a similar mentality.
“I think me and Ian were similar types of players,” says Cameron.
“In terms of the demands we put on ourselves first, we were winners.
“We worked hard for the team and if anybody fell by the wayside we let them know.
“I don’t think we’re any different as manager and assistant.”
Asked to describe his new role, Cameron says that he’s there to support Murray.
He take responsibility for the “silly things” so the manager can aim his focus elsewhere.
“So he can concentrate on the nitty gritty, the football side of things,” adds Cameron.

Work ethic praised
Rovers have played three matches since Cameron was named as the replacement for Scott Agnew who left the club at the end of Septmeber.
He was in attendance for the win away to Arbroath but has missed the two games due to arrangements for his milestone birthday celebrations.
“Unfortunately the last two Saturdays I’ve not been there because it came right out of the blue.
“We’d already organised a cruise for a week because it was my 50th,” he says.
“Then after coming back from that my wife had already made plans for the weekend of my birthday last Saturday.”
He went on to praise the work ethic of the Rovers players and how it east it has made it for him to settle back into where it all began for him.
