Craig Wighton highlights area where Dunfermline can improve ahead of trip to Peterhead

Craig Wighton thinks a “good base” has been behind his side’s start to the Scottish League 1 season.

The Dunfermline Athletic striker made his 50th appearance in midweek – from the bench versus Celtic B in the SPFL Trust Trophy.

Wighton has contributed 13 goals in that time, four of which have come this season.

The Pars have conceded the fewest goals across the four SPFL divisions but have been outscored by the six teams below them in League 1.

Wighton is encouraged by Dunfermline’s defensive record – and the number of chances they have been creating.

“If you look at chances created and chances that we have had in games, there have been games that we could probably have put to bed in the first half and we have not done that,” he said.

“Yes, we want to score more goals but at the same time that could maybe make us a bit more open and vulnerable at the back.

“I think we have a good base, we are quite solid without the ball, we are hard to break down a lot of the time.

“We have created a lot of chances, maybe that final pass or final decision I think we can definitely improve on.”

Game will be ‘a little strange’

The Pars going into Saturday’s match at Balmoor facing a side, for the second consecutive week, that has changed its manager.

Last week new Clyde manager Jim Duffy led his side to a 2-2 draw at East End Park.

The SPFL’s longest-serving boss Jim McInally stepped down from Peterhead earlier in the week.

Wighton said it will be different taking on a Blue Toon team without the former Dundee United star at the helm.

Echoing the words of his manager he added that the Pars must focus on themselves.

“It will be a little strange going there and he won’t be in charge,” said Wighton.

“It is up to us at the end of the day, we know how we want to play – it is up to us to go and do that and hopefully we can get a good result.”

“From their side they will want to show what they can do for whoever is coming in but for us, we will have a game plan and we will stick to that.”
