Arbroath FC have hit out at “foul” abuse from a minority of fans after the team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Partick Thistle on Saturday.
A club statement says a number of Arbroath supporters at the game had behaved in an “unacceptable manner” inside and outside of the stadium.
It says: “This conduct can be summarised as using foul and abusive language towards players and management of both teams as well as aggressive conduct towards both Arbroath FC and Partick Thistle FC supporters.”
The exact nature of the abuse and the number of fans involved has not been confirmed.
‘Unacceptable behaviour’ caused anxiety
The club promised action would be taken against supporters involved if there was a repeat of the behaviour.
They added: “This behaviour caused concern and anxiety amongst other Arbroath FC supporters who loyally attend all home and away matches and who properly vocally support the players and management team.
“The club will absolutely not tolerate this type of unacceptable and abusive behaviour and should there be a reoccurrence, the club will take positive action against supporters who fail to conduct themselves in an orderly manner.”
Instead, the statement says fans should get behind the team for the rest of the season.
Dick Campbell’s side, currently second from bottom, left Glasgow disappointed after Partick Thistle ended its run of five straight defeats.
Speaking after the match, Campbell, booked for dissent following his reaction to a pivotal moment, said: “Christmas came early for Thistle in the first half but at half-time I felt we could get our act together.
“At that stage I thought we could go on and win the game but I couldn’t believe how it turned out.”
Arbroath remain a point ahead of Hamilton but five behind seventh-placed Cove Rangers.
They have a break from league action on Saturday when they head to Fraserburgh for a Scottish Cup third round tie.
