Raith Rovers boss Barry Smith is closing in on his first new signing with former Dumbarton player Mark Docherty in talks to join the Kirkcaldy men.
As well as playing for the Sons and the Wasps, the 29-year-old has donned the colours of St Mirren, Montrose, Stirling Albion, Brechin City, Annan Athletic and Stranraer and he was voted the Championship Player of the Month last December.
Docherty, who can play at left-back or in the centre of midfield, was released by the Sons and has been pursued by Stranraer and East Fife however the chance to join the Stark’s Park side is believed to be his preferred option.
Meanwhile, Raith have announced their lists of retained and released players.
There are few surprises with the likes of Rudi Skacel, Conor Brennan, Joel Coustrain, Chris Johnston, Kevin McHattie and Scott Roberts all being let go following Rovers’ relegation last season.
However, Mark Stewart has also been released despite the fact the striker still had a year left on his contract with the club.
Craig Barr has also announced on social media that his time with Rovers is at an end after three injury-hit seasons with the big centre-half saying: “Thank you Raith . . . they looked after me. They went above and beyond what was expected.
“Would have loved to repay the faith the club showed in me and played a full season and helped club get back to the Championship but it wasn’t to be.”
Raith are still in talks with club captain Jason Thomson while the full list of retained players reads Kevin Cuthbert, Kyle Benedictus, Bobby Barr, Ross Callachan, Ross Matthews, Iain Davidson, Lewis Vaughan, David McKay (new contract signed). Scott Robertson and Jonny Court (new contracts agreed in principle).
