He is nicknamed Sparky and Leigh Griffiths certainly sent a bolt of electricity shooting through Hampden – not once but twice.
Let’s take a step back for a moment and consider what those of us lucky enough to be at the National Stadium witnessed on Saturday.
It was, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable finales to a football match that this seasoned reporter has seen.
The wall of noise that greeted what we all thought would be Scotland’s winner – his second setpiece – had to be heard to be believed.
Also, without fear of hyperbole, what Celtic striker Griffiths produced in the space of three minutes was nothing short of remarkable.
Watch the footage back – and I’m sure many of us will have done just that since the dust settled – and you can revel in the fact that the former Dundee frontman wheeled away to celebrate both of his freekick goals long before the ball had hit the net. He knew as soon as he took them that England keeper Joe Hart was beaten.
Had Lionel Messi or Ronaldo done a Sparky at the weekend, the football world would be excitedly talking about those great players further enhancing their world-class reputations.
In a country where we do have plenty of opportunities to criticise the standard of our game, maybe we should all just enjoy the fact that the greatest feat in football at the weekend came from a Scottish boot.
