Jordan Archer has revealed he made his mum cry when he told her he had been called into the Scotland squad.
The Millwall goalkeeper was a surprise choice to join Celtic’s Craig Gordon and Allan McGregor of Hull in manager Gordon Strachan’s squad for the double-header against Lithuania and Malta.
The news certainly meant everything to his mother Fiona MacRitchie, whose parents hail from north of the Border and give Archer the eligibility.
The 24-year-old Londoner said: “I’m honoured to be here.
“I found out after we (Millwall) played Nottingham Forest recently.
“Jim Stewart is the Scotland goalkeeping coach and I got a phone call from him.
“After that call, I had a big grin on my face.
“I went straight on the phone to my mum and she was really pleased, too.
“My mum has the Scottish connection.
“Her parents are from Clydebank, not too far from where we are now (Mar Hall in Renfrewshire).
“I’ve also got uncles spread around here.
“My grandparents moved down from Scotland to Stevenage in Hertfordshire and that’s where my mum was raised.
“She said she had a tear in her eye when I told her about the call-up. It’s a proud moment for my whole family.”
