Jason Cummings ready for his Scotland chance

Jason Cummings.
Jason Cummings.

Jason Cummings feels ready to take injured talisman Leigh Griffiths’ place for Scotland in Thursday night’s friendly against the Netherlands.

And he’s also warned his fellow Edinburgh frontman that he’s ready to take his free-kicks as well.

The Nottingham Forest striker is in line for his first cap in the Pittodrie international.

And Cummings has already teased Griffiths that he is eyeing up the set-piece responsibility that the Celtic man has famously made his own.

“If I get the nod, then I will be ready to step up,” he said.

“But there are a lot of top players in the Scotland squad, so I won’t be raging if I’m not. I’m just happy to be here. It’s a massive honour.

“I messaged Leigh and told him that’s me on the free-kicks now.

“He sent me a text saying ‘well done on getting in the squad’ before he got injured.

“I do think he will be happy if I do well. We got on great together – he’s a good lad.

“Leigh will want me to do well but he might not want me scoring a free-kick. He’ll be raging at that.

“I think we are similar. We both score goals. That’s what our games are based upon. I’m probably a bit better-looking than him, though!”

Griffiths’ iconic dead-ball double against England will live long in the memory for most Scotsmen but Cummings revealed that, even though he was celebrating the Hampden free-kicks at the time like the rest of the country, that June afternoon is a bit of a blur.

“I was in Ibiza,” he recalled. “I was there with Leigh the year before. We have the same group of pals, so he might have been there if he wasn’t playing.

“For that game, I was in the Highlander bar in Ibiza watching it. It was bouncing. I can’t even mind the goals, actually! It was good.”
