Brechin are still waiting to discover the full extent of the knee injury sustained by on-loan Dundee United defender Lewis Toshney.
The 26-year-old was stretchered off during the Angus side’s 2-1 defeat at Dumbarton last Saturday.
Toshney has had a wretched time with injuries in recent seasons and at one point, there were fears his career might be over.
However, the former Scotland Under-21 player battled back to full fitness and signed for Brechin in January, playing 11 games before suffering this latest setback.
While there is still doubt over how badly he has damaged his knee, he will certainly miss tomorrow’s big derby at the Glebe against title-chasing Arbroath.
It is a big blow for the manager with Brechin fighting for their League 1 survival, sitting second bottom of the table.
Smith said: “There was a lot of swelling on his knee so Lewis will have a scan later this week or at the start of next week.
“He just landed awkwardly.
“We still don’t know the full extent of the injury but he will obviously be out for Saturday.
“You never want to be losing somebody with Lewis’s experience especially at this stage of the season.
“But we have two centre-backs who will provide very good cover.
“It gives them an opportunity to play for the remainder of the season.”
