Martyn Fotheringham has decided to hang up his boots to move into a coaching role with Montrose.
The 36-year-old midfielder was a key player as the Gable Endies won promotion from League 2 last season but he has only made eight appearances in this campaign because of persistent groin and pelvic problems with his last game coming against East Fife on December 1.
The popular “Foxy” also of course previously spent 10 years with Forfar and was awarded a testimonial with the club in 2017.
Fotheringham had hoped to sign off in style for Montrose at his old stomping ground of Station Park today before calling time on his playing career but the injuries have put paid to that.
Petrie said: “Foxy is coming onto the coaching staff next season.
“I would have loved to get him onto the pitch especially at Forfar but he is struggling with his long-term groin injury.
“Martyn has had a fantastic playing career and I am looking forward to working with him as a coach.”
