Greg Stewart admits that if Dundee do relegate United at Dens next Monday night, it will be fitting payback for the club’s fans after years of hurt at the hands of their arch rivals.
The Tangerines’ defeat against Hamilton at Tannadice yesterday ensured there is a chance that the Dark Blues could send their near neighbours down to the Championship in a week’s time.
The Dundee front man admitted that if that happened, he would miss the derbies next season – however, Stewart insists he has no sympathy at all for United and the desperate situation they find themselves in.
He said: “We just want to win every game. If we put them down, then that will be an extra wee bonus for the fans.
“As a player, you will miss out on the derbies next season.
“They are great games to play in but I am sure the fans will really be looking forward to that if we have a chance to put them down.
“The fans will come out in their numbers if we have that opportunity.
“We want to win the game and if that puts them down, then it puts them down.
“They have had the bragging rights for so many years and I am sure that has hurt the fans at Dundee so if we put them down, this could make up for it.
“The momentum has shifted to us and if they go down it is just one of those things – you deserve to go down.
“Hopefully, we do it.”
