Albert Kidd has welcomed Dundee derby hero Craig Wighton into an exclusive club.
The man who scored the two goals for the Dark Blues that denied Hearts a Premier league title 30 years ago is delighted that it was a fellow Dundonian who wrote a new chapter of club history by sending rivals Dundee United into the Championship.
Kidd, back in Dundee to publicise the book AK 86: Two Shots In The Heart of Scottish Football, said: “It possibly will be looked back on like my goals.
“For it to be the goal that got Dundee United relegated at Dens Park, it will always be remembered.
“Mine always come up in conversation and I’m sure this one will as well.
“To be a local lad and score the goal is a big thing.
“People will mention it to his family. A Dundonian scoring a goal of that magnitude has got a similar impact to me scoring the two goals against Hearts that won Celtic the league.
“Craig will be having a good day today I think!”
Kidd, who now calls Australia home, can relate to the pressure to perform that is on Wighton.
“I’m from Dundee myself and there are a lot of people on the terraces who know you personally,” he explained.
“When I came back from Motherwell there were eyes on me for different reasons.
“Folk know your brother, they know your sister, they know what your father does.
“I did feel a bit of pressure in that regard.
“I never thought I’d go through a confidence thing but I did. And I think that was because I was coming back to my home city and there were more eyes on me.”
He added: “Last night brought back fantastic memories.
“I loved the game. I was with Bobby Glennie, Tosh McKinlay and Brian Scrimgeour.
“It was a very important match for Dundee. It could have gone either way but I was happy Dundee got the win.
“It’s unfortunate for United that they’re going down but maybe that’s a bit of payback for them winning the league here in ’83 and I’m sure there were a lot of very happy Dundee fans last night for many reasons.”
