He may have scored 31 goals last season but Yordi Teijsse has revealed that clubs in his Holland homeland were unwilling to sign him because he was an amateur.
That though did not put off Dundee who snapped up the prolific 23-year-old striker on Monday on a two-year deal.
Now, after leaving Hoofdklasse side Quick Boys, Teijsse is looking forward to starting life as a professional at Dens.
He said: “There were some Jupiler League (Dutch First Division) clubs interested but only Dundee and Telestar were serious.
“The Dutch clubs thought because I was an amateur the risk was too great.
“But six months ago, someone tipped off Dundee about me and I heard they were watching.
“I got an offer through the mail two days ago so it was an easy choice.
“I am in Scotland now, I have been to the stadium and I am looking for a house.
“The manager, Paul Hartley, is a very nice man and he has told me that I should feel no pressure in the first year.
“He has said to just come here and enjoy playing – and that he thinks I will produce for the club.
“I am looking forward to living as a professional and training every day.
“I want to keep fit, improve as a player and play matches.
“What I do this season is a bonus.”
After his scoring exploits last season, Quick Boys were understandably sorry to see Teijsse leave but he revealed that the club wouldn’t stand in his way.
He added: “The club are sad that I am leaving but they didn’t begrudge me making this step.
“There was always a deal that said I could leave before June 1 if I found another club.”
