Dundee determined to end long wait for silverware success

With Hibs finally ending their long wait for Scottish Cup glory last month, Dundee are arguably now the top team that have gone the longest without tasting success in the competition.

Fans of the Dark Blues need no reminding that the last time – indeed the only occasion – they have lifted the famous old trophy was away back in 1910.

The club did lift the League Cup but that was as long ago as 1973 and current Dundee boss Paul Hartley insists that silverware success is well overdue.

He said: “It has been a long time (since Scottish Cup win) and it is something we want to try to work on.

“It isn’t easy to win a cup and a lot of other clubs would say the same – that they want to win the Scottish Cup.

“It is always your best chance of winning silverware, the League Cup and the Scottish Cup.

“It has been far too long since Dundee won something and we don’t hide from that but there are a lot of key factors in winning a cup along the way.

“You have to play well and have a wee bit of luck sometimes – but you have to earn it.”

While silverware success continues to prove elusive for Dundee, Hartley insists big strides have been made as a club in the last couple of years.

There has been a complete overhaul of the playing staff since he became boss at Dens while behind the scenes, the American owners have steadied what had previously been a shaky ship.

When asked how much he thought the club had improved over last couple of years, Hartley replied: “Enormously. Off the pitch there is stability surrounding the club.

“With the people who own the club now, everything is working well.

“I think the squad has really improved and we can attract better players.

“I feel there has been a big improvement all over.”
