Greg Stewart had what some would call a “real” job before taking up football full-time.
He used to get up at 6 am every morning to work a high-pressure water jet at the Grangemouth oil refinery.
At the end of a physically-demanding shift he would then head off to train part-time, combining his day job with the sport he loves.
Now he appears to be doubling up again, both as the star player in the Dark Blues’ team and as a top salesman.
Let’s face it, Stewart is doing an absolutely brilliant job of selling himself to another club.
He walked the man-of-the-match vote against Forfar after adding another two goals to his tally in front of a watching Birmingham City scout.
The only consolation for Dundee and their fans is that while he is smack bang in the middle of the shop window he is helping the team and surely guaranteeing a decent fee for him when, as seems inevitable now, he moves to England.
When Stewart’s future is discussed with players and officials at Dens – even manager Paul Hartley – you can detect the realism accompanying the desire to keep him.
Of course the Dark Blues want him to stick around but it is now doubtful that even the most optimistic of supporters think they will be able to hang on to him.
