Dundee kid Kerr Waddell could move again as English Premier League side keep tabs on him

Kerr Waddell has been farmed out on loan to Morton but there’s a chance the Dundee kid could be on the move again.

The 20-year-old, who made 22 appearances for the Dark Blues last term, has been sent to Cappielow until January to gain even more first-team experience.

But the Tele understands the move could be shortened because of interest from England. Before heading west, the young centre-half turned out for his parent club in the friendly draw at Brechin last Friday.

And watching on was a scout from an English Premier League outfit who had headed north to specifically have a look at him.

While that’s unlikely to lead to an immediate move to take him south, his first few appearances at Morton are likely to be monitored.

Should Waddell impress, there’s still the possibility an offer for him could be forthcoming before the transfer window closes at the end of next month.

It would take a substantial offer to persuade Dundee to part with him. Although he’s out of the first-team picture right now, he remains highly regarded at Dens.

Meanwhile, it was Waddell’s performances in the two Betfred derbies around this time last year that persuaded then Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon, now in charge of the ’Ton, to take him there.

The Dark Blues’ travelling party has arrived in Portugal.

While Waddell gets to know his temporary new team-mates, the Dundee squad have settled in at their training camp in the Algarve.

They were having double training sessions there today, before Saturday’s bounce game against Mansfield.

A second game will follow against SC Farense on Tuesday night, before boss Neil McCann brings the squad back to Scotland next Wednesday.

The focus out in Portugal is on making sure the team are ready to go from the first whistle when the Betfred Cup kicks off with a group tie at Stirling Albion next week.

For the second year running Neil is stressing the coming come ties are not being considered part of the pre-season build up.

He insists the season proper starts with the Stirling game.

“I always looked at it that way last year, I didn’t count the Betfred as a warm up to our season, the league season,” he said.

“It’s a cup we want to go and do well in so in the pre-season games are vitally important we get the right conditioning into all the players.”
