New Dundee signing Steven Caulker unlikely to play today

New signing Steven Caulker is likely to be handed a watching brief when Dundee face Motherwell in the Scottish Cup today.

Dark Blues boss Neil McCann has hailed the England international’s arrival on an 18-month contract as one of the best pieces of transfer business this season.

Fans, though, may have to wait a while to see the 26-year-old former Spurs and QPR man in action.

Caulker left QPR in December and has been training on his own at Luton Town since.

And the last of his four appearances for the Loftus Road club this season came in a league draw at Barnsley back in late September.

Mindful of that lack of game time, his new gaffer has stressed he will not rush the central defender into action.

He has admitted he was impressed with Caulker’s fitness when he trained with his new team-mates for the first time yesterday.

Even so, it looks unlikely he will be thrown in against the Steelmen.

And Dundee are well covered in central defence.

Club captain Darren O’Dea and youngster Kerr Waddell filled the berths in last week’s 4-1 home defeat against Ross County.

If their partnership is to be broken up, Josh Meekings could be in the frame if he’s recovered from injury in time.

Angolan international Genseric Kusunga, signed on a short-term deal a week ago, is another option.

After last week’s disaster Dundee will make changes.

Loan striker Simon Murray can’t play because he is cup-tied.

That could pave a way for the return of Sofien Moussa, though he’s also been struggling with injury and missed out against County.
