Dundee boss makes apology to fans after Dens Park debacle

Dundee will be holding a post-mortem into the mistakes that saw them blow the chance to open an 11-point gap to the bottom of the Premiership on Saturday.

And as disappointed as he was with his players as they succumbed 4-1 to Ross County, manager Neil McCann will be looking at his own errors as well.

The Dark Blues could have put themselves out of sight of the rock bottom Staggies but instead are only five points ahead of them after their heaviest home league defeat this term.

Neil felt it was a largely self-inflicted loss, particularly after his team had hauled themselves level from losing a goal early in the second half.

He said: “Lewis Spence came on and he added a little bit of punch. You could see we were up and we scored a good header from Kerr Waddell. Then I thought, right we’ve got a hold of the game.

“Then we lost a sloppy goal and you can see it had an effect on us.

“Ironically, I would have said it probably came during our best spell of the match.”

Dundee missed the chance to open up an 11-point gap to Ross County at the bottom of the Premiership, losing 4-1 to the Staggies on Saturday.

That second County goal came from a Spence mistake but his gaffer felt the third and fourth goals were down to bad defending.

However, he did not excuse himself from blame.

“I’m not going to just throw the boys under the bus,” Neil said.

“I made mistakes as well and I will take responsibility for some of the decisions I made.

“Together we are certainly going to have to look over that and see, ourselves, how bad that was.

“That’s not good enough and I can only apologise to the fans because that doesn’t sit well with me.

“It doesn’t sit well with them and I’m sure it doesn’t sit well with the players.”

After fine away wins at Hamilton Accies and Inverness Caley Thistle, the gaffer admitted he hadn’t seen the slump coming.

“It’s been really disappointing because we prepared really well.

“It was really poor considering the last two away performances have been very good.”

Now Dundee face a break from league action when Motherwell visit Dens Park in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

He could have defender Josh Meekings back available for that one.

Meekings missed out on recovering from a knock to face County.
