Former Blackburn and Salford City boss Gary Bowyer has emerged as a new frontrunner for the vacant Dundee manager job.
Courier Sport yesterday revealed another ex-Ewood Park gaffer was among the candidates to be Mark McGhee’s successor in Steve Kean.
The Dark Blues’ search for the man that would take them back to the Premiership at the first time of asking next season has rumbled on for some time now.
McGhee left the club after the final match of last season over three weeks ago and still the role remains vacant.
Former Hibs managers Jack Ross and Shaun Maloney were initially the preferred candidates before Ross pulled out and talks with the latter broke down.
Ex-Kilmarnock assistant Peter Leven has been linked with the job but is no longer high on the list of options.
Now the Scottish Sun are reporting 50-year-old Bowyer has joined Kean among the favourites to take over at Dens Park as managing director John Nelms and technical director Gordon Strachan narrow their search ahead of pre-season.
Who is Gary Bowyer?
He was sacked by Salford in May after missing out on the League One play-offs but has plenty of managerial experience in the English lower leagues.
He took over as full-time Blackburn boss in 2013 after a couple of caretaker stints with the club in the Championship.
Since then he spent two years as Blackpool manager, winning promotion from League Two via the play-offs, and then a year at Bradford City.
After taking over from David Hopkin, his time at Valley Parade wasn’t a happy one as he won just 14 of 48 matches in charge before leaving in February 2020.
A spell with Derby County as a youth coach followed before he took over at Salford City, the club owned by former Manchester United stars including Gary Neville, David Beckham and Paul Scholes.
After a poor start to the season, Bowyer was sacked by Salford after a 10th-placed finish in League Two.
He could now be the man Dundee turn to as they bid to return to the Premiership at the first time of asking.
