It has not been officially announced but Dundee have a head of recruitment in place.

Managing director John Nelms stated at the end of last season a shake-up in the football department at Dens Park would include this new recruitment role.

Former Scotland and Celtic boss Gordon Strachan, in his position as technical director, led the revamp following a dreadful Premiership campaign that ended in relegation.

The head of recruitment job is designed to lighten the load on the club’s manager in terms of transfers in and out.

Gary Bowyer retains final say on all transfers but delegates scouting and analysis and negotiation to the head of recruitment.

Who is head of recruitment?

Former police officer Gary Ogilvie is Dundee’s new head of recruitment.

Gary Ogilvie is the man Dundee have chosen as their first-ever head of recruitment.

He is a former Sunderland and Airdrie defender who has been a long-time youth coach with the Dark Blues.

He was a Dundee youth player who also turned out for junior sides including Dundee Violet and Broughty Athletic among others.

Dundonian Ogilvie may be better known for his time as the most senior police officer in the city.

But he’s been in place as Dundee’s head of recruitment for a number of weeks.

Nelms said: “He is appointed and he’s doing a great job.

“He is very detail-oriented, which I love. He has been going through the processes and getting everybody used to a new scenario, making sure people talk to the right people.

“Making sure everything goes through Gary, that’s where we are at the moment. Everybody’s phone has been going but it’s his phone now.

“He came into the job during the transfer window so he’s in his second month but we had talked about it long before that and he had things in place.”

‘In a good spot’

Dundee’s summer hasn’t been a busy one in terms of players coming in or out.

Only one permanent transfer has been made in Tyler French, along with two loan deals.

Aside from young players going out on loan themselves, no players have left since Bowyer took charge.

Tyler French has been the only permanent transfer made this summer.

Nelms, though, is happy with the squad Dundee have right now.

“It’s about what is available and what do we need?” he added.

“We aren’t just going to sign a player for the sake of signing someone, we sign players we need.

“We think the players we have, who have got out of this league before and we’ve added to, will help us be successful.

“We’d love to have a 6ft 5in goalscoring No 9 but so does everyone else.

“But the team itself is working well and the new facilities have meant communication among everybody has been fantastic.

“We’re in a good spot.

“We’ll see in January if we are still in a good spot and reassess it before the January transfer window.”
