Max Anderson set challenge by Dundee boss Gary Bowyer after best display of the season

Max Anderson’s performance from the bench in the weekend comeback against Partick Thistle was his best of the season.

That’s the opinion of his manager, Gary Bowyer, after sending the 21-year-old on to the pitch, alongside Zach Robinson and Zak Rudden, with Dundee 2-0 down.

Robinson played a part in the first two Dundee goals before Anderson laid on Cammy Kerr’s winner with a cut-back from wide.

It was only the Scotland U/21 international’s third substitute appearance in the previous six games after his last start came in the defeat at Cove Rangers at the start of October.

He started and scored in that defeat in Aberdeen but was hooked on the hour-mark with the team trailing 3-1.

Now, though, he has taken Saturday’s chance to impress his manager.

And Bowyer wants to see more of those displays.

“That was the best I’ve seen him in my time here,” the Dundee boss said.

“The challenge for Max is to produce that consistently.

“We have a few at the moment who need to be a bit more consistent in their performances.

“But Max should take a hell of a lot of confidence out of Saturday’s game.

“He impressed me with his ability to get on the ball, to control things and his passing.

“He made things happen for us going forward.”

‘Build on it’

The come-from-behind victory was the first time in almost 22 years Dundee had come from two goals down to win an away league match.

And Bowyer says there has been a noticeable difference among the players in training this week.

Now the focus switches to another crunch clash with Raith Rovers, a side level with the Dark Blues in the table with both trailing leaders Ayr by three points.

“There’s definitely a spring in the step this week after the manner of Saturday’s victory,” Bowyer added.

“But we have to build on it now.

“We are starting to get some momentum. In the last five games we won two and drew three.

“There are no easy games and we have no right to just turn up and win.

“We have to earn everything we get.

“Saturday, we will take on a good Raith Rovers team. We saw them at their place but they are coming into the game full of confidence after their good recent run.”
