Dundee were handed a heavy defeat in the Reserves Cup after a 5-1 home drubbing to Queen’s Park.
The two second strings faced off at Whitton Park in the third round of fixtures in Group One with a Scott Williamson hat-trick giving the Spiders the points.
Defeat brings an end to a two-match winning streak that has put the Dark Blues top of the Reserve League after three games.
This was a first victory for Queen’s Park in the cup this season as they go level with the Dark Blues on three points.
Who played?
Northern Ireland international Niall McGinn’s exile from the first-team picture continued as he lined up once more for the reserves at Whitton Park.
He was joined by other senior men who have been short of game time lately.
Cillian Sheridan started Dundee’s weekend Championship win over Hamilton but only played 45 minutes while Derick Osei was a second-half sub.
Both started alongside Lyall Cameron, Luke McCowan and goalie Harry Sharp.
The 21-year-old keeper, though, was beaten early on as Queen’s Park took the lead through an Alex Bannon header.
With Sheridan having played 45 minutes at the weekend, he was replaced by another senior frontman in Alex Jakubiak at half-time.
The visitors, though, extended their lead after the break as Scott Williamson curled the ball past Sharp before adding his second of the afternoon on 69 minutes.
A late breakaway brought a fourth on 86 minutes as Alex Fairlie netted before substitute Jamie Richardson turned home a McGinn free-kick for a late Dundee consolation.
There was still time, however, for Williamson to add his third of the day in the final minute of normal time.
Dundee’s next reserve outing comes on December 6 at Whitton Park as Hamilton Academical visit for a league fixture.
