Dundee boss Neil McCann admits he has a big selection headache ahead of tonight’s first competitive action of the season against Raith Rovers in the Betfred Cup – who to leave out of his starting XI.
The Dark Blues boss admits he has been impressed by the performances his squad have produced in their friendly matches so far.
New signings such as Scott Allan, Roarie Deacon and Randy Wolters have all laid down markers for inclusion along with others who were at Dens last season.
And McCann admits that has left him with some difficult decisions to make before he announces his team to take the field at Stark’s Park.
The manager said: “Darren O’Dea is OK so I have a full squad to choose from.
“It will be difficult to select a first XI as I think everybody has staked their claim including the new signings.
“You are obviously looking for guys to come in and show why we signed them and I think every one of them has.
“I think what we have done is add people who are all very different.
“I believe we are starting to build a really good squad.”
Raith will be playing their football in League 1 this season after being relegated from the Championship.
However, McCann saw enough from Barry Smith’s side in defeat to Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday to believe his Premiership outfit can certainly take nothing for granted in Kirkcaldy.
The manager added: “With us not playing on Saturday, I had the advantage of going to watch both teams which was good.
“I think Barry is a coach who doesn’t deviate too much from what he thinks works.
“I don’t think he is a coach who will come out and try something too clever.
“He knows what he has to play with and they will be hard to beat.
“But he has players within that team I saw on Saturday that can give us problems so we need to be absolutely on it.”
