His big move to play in England with Wigan may not have worked out as he hoped but Jack Hendry insists he has returned north of the border a better player.
The 22-year-old was snapped up by Dundee boss Neil McCann two weeks ago with the central defender eager to secure regular football after his opportunities were limited with the Latics.
Hendry moved to the DW Stadium in 2015 from Partick Thistle with Premier League giants Everton also interested in the highly-rated centre-half at the time.
However, the defender struggled to make an impact at Wigan and was loaned out to Shrewsbury Town and MK Dons.
Now, he is determined to kick-start his career once again playing for the Dark Blues and he hopes to win the nod against Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park in the Betfred Cup tonight.
Hendry said: “The gaffer (McCann) called me a couple of weeks ago.
“I spoke to him about the possibility of coming up here.
“It was a positive phone call and I liked what he had to say.
“It was a chance for me to come up and play football and I think we can have a good season looking at all the signings we’ve made so far.
“It was difficult down at Wigan.
“They have a big squad and it was very competitive.
“If they change the managers about like they have been recently, it can be hard to get settled.
“The manager who came in earlier this season said there were a few boys he’d be getting rid of this season.
“I had a decision to make whether I would keep trying to get into the side or come up here and kick-on. So I decided to move.
“I wanted this opportunity to come up here and get games.”
Hendry added: “I don’t look back and have any regrets.
“It was an opportunity that came up and I thought it was very good at the time.
“I learned a lot and I think it has put me in good stead to be honest.
“You can look back and say I should have gone a wee bit later, but it was an opportunity that came up which looked very positive.
“I still think I’ve come back a better player.
“It didn’t work out as planned but it was still a good move.”
When asked if he felt he had a point or two to prove, Hendry added: “I don’t think so necessarily.
“I feel I might have a point to prove that I am still good enough to play down there
“I think I’ve maybe got a point to prove to people up here that I was good enough to earn that move.
“Maybe that’s the case a little bit and I feel as though I was worthy of it.”
