Dundee slumped to their fifth defeat in a row with this loss in Leith to Hibs.
The Dark Blues put up a spirited performance in a pulsating match but it just wasn’t enough to stop the rot.
The fans had barely taken their seats before Dundee fell behind to a Martin Boyle goal but Dundee came storming back through Marcus Haber.
However, Hibs regained the lead in the second half through Simon Murray and it was an advantage they would not relinquish.
The big team news from a Dundee perspective was the absence from the squad of keeper Scott Bain with reports surfacing this morning that there had been an alleged bust-up with boss Neil McCann after last week’s game with Hamilton.
Summer signing Elliott Parish took his place between the sticks to make his debut for the club.
The Dark Blues manager made four further changes from the Accies match with A-Jay Leitch-Smith, Randy Wolters, Jesse Curran and Kerr Waddell dropping out with Cammy Kerr, Kevin Holt, Faissal El Bakhtaoui and Roarie Deacon being restored to the starting line-up.
McCann also ditched the back three he has favoured in recent weeks reverting to a four.
Dundee got off to a disastrous start, conceding with just one minute on the clock. Hibs won the ball in midfield with former Dark Blues front man Boyle advancing on goal before firing a low angled shot from 16 yards into the bottom right corner of Parish’s net.
Boyle’s tail was up and shortly after, he danced his way into the Dundee box with Holt having to make a last-ditch block to deny the front man.
However, McCann’s men came storming right back into it in the 21st minute. Deacon sent a tempting cross in from the right to Haber who headed back across goal and into the net past Hibs keeper Ofir Marciano.
Home boss Neil Lennon was forced into an early change in the 35th minute with Dylan McGeouch having to go off to be replaced by Anthony Stokes.
With Dundee coming more and more into the game, the Easter Road faithful became increasingly restless and there was no doubting who the happier manager would be during the half-time interval.
Just four minutes after the restart, Dundee looked certain to take the lead when the ball broke to El Bakhtaoui 12 yards out from the Hibs goal. He hit a fierce shot but Marciano pulled off an unbelievable save diving low to his right.
There was then an almighty stramash after Paul McGowan was caught by an elbow just inside the Dundee half with both assistants having to come on to help referee John Beaton separate the warring factions. There was a suggestion that Stokes had also aimed a punch at Dark Blues defender Jack Hendry.
Once the dust died down, there were bookings for the home side’s Ryan Porteous and Stokes along with Hendry.
Shortly after, El Bakhtaoui had another shot from 20 yards which Marciano again did well to save with Murray then having a great chance on the turn but he shot wide.
However, the former Dundee United player made no mistake in the 63rd minute. Stokes swung an inviting ball in from the left with the unmarked Murray calmly volleying home from six yards to give Hibs the lead once more.
The same Hibs player had another great chance in the 85th minute but his shot flashed across the face of the goal with Paul Hanlon doing something similar shortly after.
